| IDIOM CORNER
|
||
| Idioms are expressions that cannot be understood from the meaning of their separate words, but from the meaning of the whole. (Webster) Because they originate in experiences and associations particular to certain societies, they often baffle persons outside that society. Our rapidly changing society keeps idioms in constant flux as certain experiences and associations fade, giving way to others. Idioms are a particular obstacle for people trying to function in another language. Native speakers often are unaware when they are using an idiom and dont bother to explain it to the outsider. Nowhere do idioms unseat each other more swiftly than in the U.S., the worlds most fluid society. JTI offers this cartoon to anyone trying to keep up with the fast-changing world of American English idioms! |
